In fact stars, unlike grains of sand, have individuality and personality because of these points of difference. Many have distinct identities, despite their superficial sameness.
Their uniqueness stems from details. In details and specifics you find points of difference and individuality. The same is true of you when writing about yourselves in your essays. If you write about the factors that you share with many other applicants, then you will be like grains of sand on the beach. When you write about yourself in specific terms, you will allow yourself to shine distinctively.
For example, a young relative volunteered this summer as a counselor for children with serious disabilities. Her camper is confined to a wheelchair and requires round-the-clock care. If this relative simply reports that she volunteered at a camp or was a counselor over the summer, she would be like a grain of sand blending into the beach of many college students who work at camps or even volunteer as counselors. However if she were to write about pushing a slender teenager in a wheelchair uphill while carrying a spare, 20-pound ventilator battery, she, like the stars in the sky, would be distinguishing herself.
You don’t have to try to be different. All human beings are different, but you can choose anecdotes and specifics to ensure that your individuality glitters. Write as a star shines. Distinctively. Uniquely.

Matchmaking in Admissions

I recently found myself playing matchmaker. (No, matchmaking is not part of Accepted’s service offerings. I was off-duty.) I was talking to the young woman about a young man I know well. She asked me some questions about him, including “Is he growth-oriented?” “Yes,” I responded, “He is interested in growth.” But she wasn’t satisfied with my assurance.
“Is he really growth-oriented?”
I felt like saying, “He is absolutely opposed to stagnation and decline.” But I decided I better behave myself. I started telling her about the young man’s activities that evidenced striving for self-improvement and personal growth.
Apparently she was satisfied with my response and decided he was worth the time it takes for a cup of coffee. Mission accomplished.
There is a profound lesson here for you. You are trying to convince the schools that you are a match for them. You can take their buzz words or key values and try to spit them back. You will fail to convince the application reader that you are worth an interview invitation just as I failed to convince the young lady when I said the young man was “growth-oriented.”
However, if you provide facts and details that persuade the readers you share their values, you will be showing them you are a match. So use facts, not declarations or assertions, to prove your points and get that interview invitation or admissions date.

MBA Admissions Round-Up

I will resume providing tips on the 2008 MBA essays and applications next week. I know several schools have released their 2008 applications, but there have also been several informative posts and articles that have come out in the last week, and I decided to do a brief survey for today.
I highly recommend Dee Leopold's blog. Dee is the Managing Director, Admissions and Financial Aid at Harvard Business School. She really opens a window into Harvard and its admissions process through her blog. I particularly recommend her posts on Leadership dated July 10 and Update from Dee dated August 1. (Unfortunately I couldn't find the permalinks so I can't link to these specific posts.)

Transition planning continues

The University continues to carefully plan the conversion of Quaker Square into a residence hall. UA agreed to purchase Quaker Square in June.
Students are expected to move in after the new year. Planners today are discussing measures to enhance student safety and access to the Main Campus, among other matters.
Students who live in the East Quad (Joey, Wallaby, Wallaroo and Brown Street halls) may be affected by stadium construction. If so, they will be given a number of alternative living options for the spring semester; the University will strive to meet students' hall and roommate requests, and it will help them move into their new home as well.

Press Release - Weekly Application Survey

The Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA) today released its Weekly Mortgage Applications Survey for the week ending August 3, 2007. The Market Composite Index, a measure of mortgage loan application volume, was 656.5, an increase of 8.1 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from 607.1 one week earlier. On an unadjusted basis, the Index increased 7.7 percent compared with the previous week and was up 18.0 percent compared with the same week one year earlier.
The Refinance Index increased 9.1 percent to 1881.1 from 1724.1 the previous week and the seasonally adjusted Purchase Index increased 7.4 percent to 447.4 from 416.6 one week earlier. On an unadjusted basis, the Purchase Index increased 6.8 percent to 486.9 from 455.7 the previous week. The seasonally adjusted Conventional Index increased 8.0 percent to 958.5 from 887.2 the previous week, and the seasonally adjusted Government Index increased 9.3 percent to 152.9 from 139.9 the previous week. The four week moving average for the seasonally adjusted Market Index is up 1.2 percent to 626.0 from 618.5. The four week moving average is down 0.4 percent to 433.7 from 435.3 for the Purchase Index, while this average is up 3.6 percent to 1753.9 from 1692.8 for the Refinance Index.
The refinance share of mortgage activity increased to 39.9 percent of total applications from 39.4 percent the previous week. The adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) share of activity increased to 22.5 from 22.3 percent of total applications from the previous week.
The average contract interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages decreased to 6.41 percent from 6.50 percent, with points decreasing to 1.62 from 1.66 (including the origination fee) for 80 percent loan-to-value (LTV) ratio loans.
The average contract interest rate for 15-year fixed-rate mortgages decreased to 6.16 from 6.20 percent, with points decreasing to 1.18 from 1.30 (including the origination fee) for 80 percent LTV loans.
The average contract interest rate for one-year ARMs decreased to 5.69 from 5.73 percent, with points decreasing to 1.09 from 1.12 (including the origination fee) for 80 percent LTV loans.

Case questionsHe asked me if I am Starbucks GM in certain place, how will I expand the market share in remote place? We had a lot of discussion about marketing strategies. The interviwer will ask you many " why" and " how "
One minute to promote your favorite movie to the interviewer
Who is your role model? and why?
What is your strength and weakness?
Case interview is very special because I had never thoughtthose question until I was asked.

1. Why are you pursuing an MBA at this point in your career? Describe your personal and professional goals and the role an MBA from the University of Chicago GSB plays in your plans to reach these goals. (1500 word maximum) :

Essay A: What matters most to you, and why?
Essay B: What are your career aspirations? How will your education at Stanford help you achieve them?
As a Stanford MBA student, you will be assigned a team of advisors who will guide both your academic experience and your personal development. Your team will include a faculty advisor, a career counselor, and a leadership coach. Use Essay B to help you prepare for your first conversations with these mentors.
Essay C: Answer 2 of the questions listed below.
In answering both questions in Essay C, tell us not only what you did, but also how you did it. Tell us the outcome and describe how people responded. Describe only experiences that have occurred during the last three years.
Tell us about a time when you empowered others.
Tell us about a time when you had a significant impact on a person, group or organization.
Tell us about a time when you tried to reach a goal or complete a task that was challenging, difficult, or frustrating.
Tell us about a time when you went beyond what was defined, established, or expected.
Essay Length & Format
Your answers for all 3 essay questions cannot exceed 7 pages in total, double spaced using a 12-point font.
Each of you has your own story to tell, so be sure you allocate these 7 pages among the essays in the way that is most effective for you.
We provide some guidelines below as a starting point, but you should feel comfortable to write as much or little as you like on any question, as long as you do not exceed 7 pages total.
Essay A: 3 pages
Essay B: 2 pages
Essay C: 1 page each

First-time Applicant Essays
All first-time applicants are required to complete four essays, with the option of a fifth essay that may be used to address extenuating circumstances. Reapplicants who applied for the Entering Fall 2006 or 2007 Class are to complete the re-applicant essays. All other reapplicants are to complete the first-time applicant essays.
REQUIRED:
1. Describe your career progress to date and your future short-term and long-term career goals. How do you expect a Wharton MBA to help you achieve these goals, and why is now the best time for you to join our program? (1,000 words)
2. Describe a failure or setback that you have experienced. What role did you play and what did you learn about yourself? (500 words)
3. Tell us about a situation in which you were an outsider. What did you learn from the experience? (500 words)
4. Please Complete One Of The Following Two Questions:
Where in your background would we find evidence of your leadership capacity and/or potential? (500 words)
Is there anything about your background or experience that you feel you have not had the opportunity to share with the Admissions Committee in your application? If yes, please explain. (500 words)
OPTIONAL:
5. If you feel there are extenuating circumstances of which the Committee should be aware, please explain them here (e.g., unexplained gaps in work experience, choice of recommenders, TOEFL waiver request, inconsistent or questionable academic performance, significant weaknesses in your application).
